Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) 2010

This is a relative ranking of areas across England according to their level of overall deprivation.

Southwark ranked as 41st most deprived borough out of the 326 local authorities in England. This is a relative improvement from previous rankings (26th in 2007 and 17th in 2004). Southwark has also moved up to being the 12th most deprived borough in London in 2010, from 6th in 2004 and 9th in 2007. To access the IMD 2010 Local Authority Summaries click here.

Considering overall deprivation at a local level there is a clear north south divide in the borough, with most deprivation falling within a north central belt, For more detail click here. Four Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs) or 2% fell within the 10% most deprived in England in 2010 compared with 16 LSOAs (10%) in 2007. These are in East Walworth, South Bermondsey, Nunhead and north Livesey. The number of LSOAs in the 20% most deprived category fell from 79 (48%) in 2007 to 54 (33%) in 2010.

IMD Domains

IMD 2010 is grouped into 7 domains, each of which is compiled from a number of indicators. These are:

Income (includes adults and children on a range of benefits):Southwark is ranked 25th most deprived borough for this domain, compared to 18th in 2007 and 2004. It has moved from 6th most deprived in London in 2004, to 7th in 2007 and 9th in 2010.

Employment (includes a range of out of work benefits):Southwark is ranked 33rd in England for this domain, compared with 22nd in 2007, and 25th in 2004. In London it is ranked 4th most deprived borough compared with 2nd in 2007 and 3rd in 2004.

Health and disability (includes morbidity, disability and premature death):Southwark has made some improvement in this domain. Although the percentage of SOAs in the 10% most deprived increased from 2.42% in 2007 to 4.24% in 2010, the percentage of SOAs in the 20-30% most deprived fell by 20.61% (from 56.36% in 2007 to 35.76% in 2010). Four of Southwark's SOAs were in the 80-100% least deprived in 2007, which increased to 10 SOAs in 2010.

Education, skills and training (includes school attainment figures for children, young people and adults with few/no qualifications):Generally Southwark's performance for this sub domain improved across the borough between IMD07 and IMD10.

In 2007 and 2010, there were no LSOAs falling into the most deprived decile nationally, and the proportion which fell into the bottom 30% decreased from 10% in 2007 to 8% in 2010. Conversely the proportion of LSOAs in the 80-100% deciles increased to nearly one fifth of all LSOAs.

Barriers to housing and other services (includes accessibility to housing and proximity of key local services):Southwark performs poorly within this domain with only six LSOAs not in the 20% most deprived nationally. Southwark is ranked 25th most deprived borough nationally, an improvement on 19th in 2007.

Crime (includes recorded crime for violence,burglary, theft and criminal damage): Southwark is ranked 50th for this domain, an improvement from the 15th ranking in 2007. 14 (8.5%) of Southwark's 165 LSOAs are among the 5% most deprived in England in 2010, this compares well with 2007 when the figure was 29 (17.6%).

Indices of Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) 2010

The proportion of Southwark's children living in deprivation fell from 43% to 37% between 2007 and 2010. However, despite this, two thirds of LSOAs were in the bottom 20% in London, and almost one quarter were in the bottom 10% nationally. For a map showing distribution of this click here.

Children in poverty

Available data shows the proportion of children (under 16) living in poverty in Southwark has fallen from 37.5% in 2006 to 33.9% in 2008. However, the rate remains considerably higher than the rate for England (21.6%). For further information click here.

Indices of Deprivation Affecting Older People Index (IDAOPI) 2010

About a quarter (45) of Southwark's 165 LSOAs fall within the 10% most deprived nationally. When considering the 30% most deprived nationally, 129 or four fifths of Southwark's LSOAs fall within this category.
