Older people


In 2009 there were 29,700 older people in Southwark, which is 10.4% of the population, lower than London (13.7%) or England (19.3%). By 2020 numbers of older people are predicted to increase by just over 8%, a slower rate of increase than Southwark's population overall. According to 2007 ethnicity estimates, 68.5% of Southwark's older people are 'White British', a greater proportion than Adults (51.7%) and Children (46.5%), but a smaller proportion than older people in London (72%) or England (91.8%). All 'White' ethnicities make up 80.4% of the older population. 'Black' ethnicities make up 14%, and of these 9.2% are 'Black Carribean,' which contrasts with Adults and Children where 'Black African' is the largest Black ethnic group.


Housing Tenure

When considering Housing Tenure for those aged 55 and above, for England 80% of the 55 - 64 group own their own property, this figure drops as age increases, falling to 60% ownership in the 85+ group. In Southwark 37% of those aged 55 - 64 own property falling to <25% of the 85+ group. Across all age groups over 55, Southwark has consistently lower home ownership than near neighbour authorities Lambeth and Lewisham. Living alone

In Southwark, 5.1% of the population are pensioners living alone, less than London (5.4%) and England (6.1%). Proportions vary across the borough, ranging from 2.4% to 8.1% of the population. It is noteworthy that in Southwark more people of pensionable age live alone (60%) than London (52%) and England (43%), for further information click here. Central heating

In Southwark 2,778 houses with at least one person of pensionable age do not have central heating. They are not spread evenly, there are as few as 31 (5.1% of older people's homes) in Surry Docks rising to 288 (28.2%) in East Dulwich. 12.1% of Southwark's population aged over 65 live in homes that have no central heating, a greater proportion than England (9.8%) but lower than neighbouring boroughs Lambeth (16.7%) and Lewisham (18.1%).For further information click here.
